JOURNALIST, EVERYDAY ACTIVIST

What thoughts do you have about balance in the world?

Being concerned about sustainability and the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis is about being concerned about the imbalance that has arisen in the world and the imbalance that has arisen in nature. Because a species, for the first time ever, has had a consumption that has affected all other living things. That's imbalance. And we need to find a way to restore balance. There's nothing I'm more concerned about than that.

How do we get better at putting in on the agenda?

When I give lectures on sustainability and balance, I usually explain it this way: You can do four things, at four different speeds.

First, you do something YOURSELF. Maybe you start sorting your own waste. Or you start consuming more sustainably. It matters on a small scale.

Phase 2: You start doing something that affects more than just yourself. Maybe you become the one in charge of a system in your building so everyone can sort waste. It has a greater impact.

Phase 3: You start communicating what you're doing to others so they can be inspired to do the same. Everyday activism becomes even more significant, more people join in, it spreads like ripples in water. If one person convinces ten, and each of those ten convinces ten more, it ends up with many people understanding sustainability and balance.

Phase 4: You influence from the bottom up - you influence politicians who can create huge changes from the top down, and you influence organizations, arrange demonstrations, create movements. That's when real change happens. We are in the midst of a massive positive everyday activist mobilization, and I see that as something very positive and constructive. I try every day to do something to influence many. That's also why I spend a lot of time on Instagram.
